Hours and Location

The Swap Shop will close for the 2025 season on November 26th!  The Swap Shop is generally open Tuesdays through Saturdays mid-April through November from 8 AM - 3:30 PM, depending on volunteer availability.

Overview

The purpose of the Swap Shop is to encourage the reuse of acceptable items thereby reducing the waste stream. Transfer Station staff are encouraged to be proactive to carry out this purpose. Rules include:

  • Visitors to the Swap Shop must first check with the Transfer Station attendant before proceeding to the shop.
  • Use of the Swap Shop is limited to residents of the City of South Portland displaying a valid Transfer Station permit.
  • Items being donated to or removed from the Swap Shop shall be at no cost to the City of South Portland. The City assumes no responsibility for any item taken from the Swap Shop.
  • The Swap Shop Attendant oversees the use of the Swap Shop and is authorized to make decisions based on rules. Visitors may not drop off items for donation without approval.
  • Rejected items will be returned to the visitor. The visitor is responsible for removal and proper disposal, including transfer station disposal fees.
  • Use of the Swap Shop is limited to reasonable visits of no more than 15 minutes at a time, no more than twice a day.
  • Visitors shall be respectful and courteous to staff and other visitors.
  • Persons violating Swap Shop rules will be asked to leave immediately.

The Swap Shop Accepts:
✔ Household items (kitchen items, picture frames, decor, lamps, etc.)
✔ Jewelry, jewelry making supplies
✔ Toys, games, puzzles
✔ Sporting goods
✔ Working small electric/electronic appliances
✔ Small Tools (garden, workshop)
✔ Hardware
✔ Garden supplies (pots, grow lights)
✔ Books, magazines, VHS/dvds
✔ Crafting/art supplies
✔ Sewing notions/knitting supplies
✔ Office supplies
✔ Mobility assistance (crutches, walkers, wheelchairs)
The Swap Shop does not accept:
🗙 TVs, computers, monitors, printers/faxes
🗙 Broken items, items w/ sharp edges (ie. knives)
🗙 Clothing/shoes (use donation bin)
🗙 Luggage, handbags, backpacks
🗙 Carpets/rugs/drapes, towels, bedding etc
🗙 Household hazardous items (paints, solvents etc)
🗙 All furniture (dining sets, bookcases, tables, chairs, desks, beds, mattresses, etc.)
🗙 Refrigerators, stoves or similar large appliances
🗙 Air conditioners, microwaves
🗙 Baby cribs and child car seats
🗙 Garden organics (plants, soil/compost etc)
🗙 Food or other perishable items
🗙 Kerosene heaters
🗙 Bikes, motorized vehicles, lawn mowers, tires
🗙 Ladders (includes pool ladders)
🗙 Other misc. large items
