Water Resource Protection
Upcoming Events:
The Water Resource Protection department invites you to upcoming Open House & Info Session events to take an inside look at the Wastewater Treatment Facility on Waterman Drive and learn about the Pearl Street Pump Station upgrade that will keep our sewer system running smoothly, prevent sewage discharge, and protect the health of Casco Bay.
Water Resource Protection is committed to safeguarding the health of South Portland's watersheds and Casco Bay by providing cost-effective and efficient water resource protection services.
As the name implies, the Water Resource Protection Department is responsible for protecting and improving local water resources, which include several small ponds and streams, the Fore River and ultimately Casco Bay. The Department’s primary responsibilities are divided between three main divisions: Treatment Systems, Collection Systems and Engineering. (The Stormwater Management Program resides in the Collection Systems Division). For more information about specific aspects of our programs, please explore the tabs on this page.

Adopt a Storm Drain Program (August 28, 2024)
The Adopt a Storm Drain program was created to involve the community in helping protect our shared water resources and reduce localized flooding. Maintaining a clean storm drain has several advantages, such as reducing the likelihood of flooding in your community, reducing litter for both health and aesthetic reasons, and preventing pollutants from entering our waterways. To learn more about the program and to sign up to adopt a storm drain, please follow this link.
