Lap Swim

Participants (of any age) must be swimming laps for exercise benefit. Generally, there are 6 lap lanes available, although not always. Patrons should be aware of the different speeds (marked on cones) and pick a lane that best represents their pace. When the orange cones at the end of the lanes, please circle swim! No water jogging allowed during these swim times.

Adult Lap Swim

For those 18 years and older, the pool will have “all lanes in”. Patrons should be aware of the different speeds (marked on cones) and pick a lane that best represents their pace. When the orange cones at the end of the lanes, please circle swim! No water jogging allowed during these swim times.

Open Swim

Generally, 2 lap lanes are available, but not always! The diving board may/may not be open. Please check the schedule carefully. Water jogging is allowed. Children under 10 must be accompanied and supervised by a swimmer 16 yrs or older. Non-swimming patrons wearing a life-jacket/PFD MUST stay within arms-reach of a parent or guardian at all times.

Aerobics Classes:

SHALLOW WATER AEROBICS – Non-swimmers welcome.  Medium level intensity class taught with the instructor giving cues for other levels. Minimal impact due to the buoyancy of the water.  Some classes share the pool with public swims.

DEEP WATER FITNESS – The workout will include aerobics and strength training.  This is a no impact class due to the depth of the water. Participants must be able to swim a minimum of 25 meters (1 length) without a floatation device.  Some classes share the pool with public swims.

J.A.M. (Joint And Movement) FITNESS – this class uses a variety of low-impact, water-based exercises and movements for those who experience stiffness and discomfort with day-to-day activities. We will focus on improving range of motion, balance, flexibility, along with muscle strength. Both the shallow and deep ends of the pool will be used, along with dumbbells, noodles, belts and other flotation and water-resistant devices.  This class shares the pool with a lap swim or swim program.

HYDRO FITNESS- this class will consist of a blend of Deep Water, Shallow Water and joint mobility-based exercises. Both the deep end and shallow end of the pool are used as we move through cardio, strength and flexibility exercises.  This class shares the pool with a lap swim.

Swim Lessons

We offer beginner and advanced swim lessons for both youth and adults, a variety of different aerobics classes, and American Red Cross Lifeguard Training courses.

Youth:

We offer lessons in the Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer.  Our lessons for children begin at 9mo and continue to age 14. Classes are divided by age and ability.  Check out our class descriptions and current offerings at southportlandme.myrec.com.

Adults:

We offer lessons in the Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer. Our lessons for adults start at age 14 and are offered for beginners (Adult Beginner lessons) and advanced swimmers (Stroke Refinement clinic).  Check out our class descriptions and current offerings at southportlandme.myrec.com.

Registration:

Registration for lessons is always offered during the month before lessons begin.  The Parks and Rec website lists these dates, and email blasts are sent out through that system to alert patrons when registration is upon us.

Be aware...Our lessons are EXTREMELY POPULAR!  Online registration is on a first come, first serve basis and we are limited to how many patrons can be in each class and how many classes can run each season.  We do offer registration to SP residents first and then allow for non-residents to register.

Days prior to registering for swim lessons, please make sure you have read the class/level descriptions online to confirm you are registering correctly.  Aquatics staff are always on hand to answer questions about level placement.

Please make sure you have a household account through MyRec (southportlandme.myrec.com) so that you will receive our email blasts and can register quickly.

Facility

Pool

The South Portland Pool is a 6-lane, 25 meter pool with a 1-meter springboard diving board and handicap accessible ramp entry. We have a water wheelchair designed for ease of entry INTO or OUT OF the water while using the ramp. Our pool depth is approximately 3.5 feet in the shallow end and bottoms out at 12 feet in the deep end.

Hot Tub

We have a 6 person hot tub spa with therapy jets which is open for public use during all of our public use swim times. The spa has a dedicated Hoyer lift to give less mobile patrons the ability to use the spa without physically walking in.

Equipment

We have Coast Guard approved lifejackets for kids (and a few adult size jackets), swim floatation belt for kids and adults, as well as noodles and barbells to assist any patrons while in the water.  Swim equipment (kickboards, hand paddles, fins and pull buoys) is available for lap swimmers. Aerobics barbells and deep water swim belts are available for use during classes and Open Swim times.

Bathing caps, aquatic belts, goggles, and padlocks for lockers are available for purchase from the front desk as well.
