Waste Reduction Tip: Plastic-Free July

Boards & Committees News Posted on July 18, 2025

Picnics, Parties, Potlucks, but please hold the Plastic

Here are a few tips to make a lasting change in eating on the go, or at a party:

  1. Bring your own utensils, plate or bowl, and drinking glass.  No more confusion about which cup is yours!
  2. Hosting?  Encourage your guests to BYO utensils and dinnerware to encourage sustainable reuse practices. Provide a place to clean them if possible before they head home.
  3. Keep a small picnic set or a set of utensils somewhere in your vehicle in case you ever want a meal on the go.  You can keep them in a reusable container or even a glass jar.
  4. Having a big party?  Visit the South Portland Swap Shop or a local thrift-store to get all the plates, utensils, coffee makers etc. that you will use. If you chose not to keep the items, pass them along to others directly or donate them again to keep the Circular Economy going!

You'll enjoy your meal much more when being plastic free.  Okay, if you must, you can bring a reusable plastic bag to transport everything to and from.

Want to do more?  Inquire at restaurants and when ordering take-out if you can supply your own containers for take away.
