Here are some recent updates from your City Council:
- City Council held a workshop on September 10, 2023 as a follow-up to its June 25 discussion on the topic of consolidating the City’s bus service with Greater Portland Metro. After staff presented on several areas Council directed them to address, and hearing from Metro officials, the City’s own Transit Advisory Committee, and the public, a majority of Councilors indicated support for consolidating bus service with Metro. Council is scheduled to vote on the consolidation on October 8, 2024. Learn more.
- On September 3, 2024, City Council voted for the City to pursue combining City offices on the Mahoney School property. The City will now look to hire a design team to work up a final plan with a solid cost estimate, and begin seeking other sources of funding to reduce the burden on taxpayers. Voters will ultimately decide if the plan moves forward. Learn about next steps for the Mahoney property.
- City Council also added $100,000 to the City’s Senior Citizen Property Tax Relief program, doubling the funds available to seniors who qualify. Learn more about the program.
- Council unanimously passed a resolve calling upon South Portland's legislative delegation to pursue measures to reduce property taxes. Read Council’s letter and resolve and watch the WGME and News Center Maine stories.
- City Council will hold a workshop on Willard Beach Short-Term Resilience on October 8, 2024 (rescheduled from September 3).
