Goal
Our aim is to minimize waste by changing how our community consumes and disposes of goods and materials. We will improve and expand existing programs that promote reducing, reusing, recycling, and composting, and explore new programs for moving toward zero waste by 2050.
Programs & Policies
Food Waste Program - In July 2018, South Portland rolled out an opt-in citywide food waste program available to all residents in the city. By diverting food waste from the landfill, this program helps to ensure that excess food is better used to nourish people, animals, industries, and soils.
South Portland Electric Tool Library (SPETL) - The SPETL features all-electric lawn care tools, which South Portland residents can borrow to use at home, free of charge. All you need is a South Portland Public Library card to sign out the equipment. Residents can borrow electric lawn mowers, leaf blowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, and edgers for one week per rental.
Swap Shop - The purpose of the Swap Shop is to encourage reuse of items that residents no longer want, but don't want to throw away. Residents can donate accepted items in good condition or take home items. No need to donate in order to take anything.
