Vehicle Registration
The City of South Portland is an agent for the State and can process re-registrations and new registrations on most passenger type vehicles, Boats, Trailers, ATVs, Motorcycles, Snowmobiles and commercial vehicles registered for gross weights less than 10,000 pounds. The City also issues license plates.
All information related to registering your vehicle can be found on the State of Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicle website. Please review on the BMV site what information you need to bring with you to process your registration.
Please note:
- New registrations will take more time. In order to allow City Hall to close on time, please plan to bring a new registration no later than a half an hour (30 minutes) before closing time.
- On new registrations, only the owner listed on title/bill of sale may register the car.
- Proof of insurance must be in effect the day of the registration, showing the effective and expiration dates and the vehicle identification number. An insurance bill is not proof of insurance. We can accept digital proof, or you may have your insurance company email your ID card to the Finance Department and we will print it when you arrive.
Payments
The City accepts credit and debit cards, checks and cash.
Fees are charged by credit card processors and collected at the time of payment. The fee for credit card transactions is 3.5%. There is a minimum charge of $2.50 on any credit card transaction.
Customers may also pay using an e-check if paying online, which is charged a flat fee of $1.95.
